One Word!

Matthew 14:28–29 — “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

It is the fourth watch of the night—the darkest, coldest, and most exhausting hour before the dawn. The disciples are trapped in a battered boat, fighting howling winds and crashing waves. Yet amidst the chaos, when Jesus appears walking on the sea, Peter does not ask for a calmer storm or a sturdier vessel. He asks for an invitation into the impossible. And Jesus responds with a single, universe-altering command: “Come.”

1. One Word Overrules the Elements

In the middle of a tempest, human logic screams to stay in the boat. Gravity dictates that you will sink; fluid dynamics and raging winds say you will fail. But Peter understood a profound spiritual secret: one word from Jesus carries more authority than every raging element around you.

You do not need a complete roadmap, a risk assessment, or ideal weather conditions to move forward. When God speaks a single word of invitation over your life, that word itself becomes the solid rock beneath your feet.

2. Step Out of the Boat of Comfort

Notice that eleven other men heard the exact same conversation, but only one got his feet wet. The boat represents your comfort zone, your predictable routine, and the illusion of human control. But the boat is also where miracles go to die.

To experience the supernatural power of God, you have to be willing to step over the edge of what you can control. True faith is never just agreeing with what Jesus says from the safety of the dry deck; it is risking everything to step out onto it.

3. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus, Not the Waves

Peter did not begin to sink because the wind suddenly grew stronger—he sank because he took his eyes off the Word and fixed them on the waves. The moment you elevate your circumstances above Christ’s command, anxiety will pull you under.

Yet even here, we see breathtaking mercy. When Peter faltered and cried out, “Lord, save me!”, Jesus did not lecture him from a distance or wait for the sea to calm before reaching down. His grace is always faster than your failure. Even when your faith wavers, His grip never does.

What storm is howling in your life right now? Stop waiting for the winds to die down before you decide to obey. Stop letting fear keep you paralyzed in the boat of what is safe and familiar. Listen closely through the noise of your situation—the Master is standing on the crashing waves, calling your name, speaking just one word: “Come.” Step out, keep your eyes fixed on Him, and walk.
